Geography of Goa

Goa - Location
Goa is situated on the western coast of the Indian Peninsula. It is separated from Maharashtra by the Terekhol River in the north, touches the boundaries of Karnataka in the south, provided with a natural enclosure by the Western Ghats in the east and a natural barrier by the Arabian Sea in the West. The state is located between the latitudes 15°48'00" North to 14°53'54" North and longitudes 74° 20'13" East to 73° 40'33" East.

Goa - Physical Features
Goa has many physical features in common with the neighboring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Physical Goa can be divided into three geographical divisions, namely, the mountainous region formed by the Sahyadri ranges in the east, the plateau region in the center and the low-lying river basins and coastal plains.

The Sahyadris Ranges spans over an area of about 600 sq km and has an average elevation of 800 m. The most prominent peaks of the ranges are Sonsagar, Vaguerim, Morlemchogor and Catlanchimauli. This area is the mother source of almost all rivers of Goa. The central region of Goa has plateaus ranging between altitudes of 30 m to 100 m. The rivers Mandovi and Zuari drain the major portions of the plains in Goa. The Chapora in the north and the Sal and the Kushavati in the south have shallower basins. These basins have alluvial flats near the coastal regions to form rich agricultural tracts. The important rivers that drain Goa are Tiracol, Baga, Mandovi, Zuari, Chapora, Sal, Galgibagh and Talpona.

Goa - Climate
Goa experiences moderate weather conditions with very little variations. The hottest month of summer is May with maximum temperature rising up to34°C. The coldest months of winter are January and February with the minimum temperature dropping to 20°C. Goa receives the maximum rainfall between the months of June and September from the Southwest monsoon. The highest rainfall is received during the month of July.

Goa - Flora and Fauna
Of the total land area of Goa, about one-third is still under forest cover. The Bhagwan Mahavir National Park near Molem is the largest wildlife reserves in Goa. It is spread over an area of 107 sq km and is home to chital, leopard and sloth bear and several species of birds. Coconut, cashew nut and jackfruit grow in abundance in Goa.
